Teams is available for non-email communications should you need it. Similarly, you should not expect others to give non-UCL contact details to you. Do not give out personal phone numbers or email addresses to students. The same is true for your students, and you'll need to set boundaries to make your work/life balance. Teaching from home, and around your home life, can mean that the boundaries between home and work are blurred. Try to ensure that praise is not reserved for a small number of constant individuals in a class so that everyone feels valued. Remote working and study can raise feelings of isolation or side-lining in individuals.Encourage communication and queries through general forums or Teams groupings for classes to ensure everyone is informed. This can lead to real and perceived unfairness within a group. It is easy to give attention to those students and colleagues that we are most familiar with and identify with, or those who are most vocal. Don’t push them, and try not to view participation in a discussion as evidence of engagement. If a student expresses a wish to remain quiet, they may have a good reason that is not immediately obvious to you. Be aware that students from some countries and cultural backgrounds may be concerned about joining in an online, and notably recorded, session in case authorities have access to what has been said.It might be worth dropping them a note outside the session to see if they are happy sitting back and listening or whether they are finding it hard to break into the session. Watch out for students who aren’t ‘joining in’.You can turn off participant microphones or remove them from sessions if they are being disruptive.Ĭlarify when the live session has ended, and wait for all students to log off/leave the session.Check regularly with students if they are able to follow along, and provide enough time to comment/ask questions when prompted. Use people’s names so everyone knows whose turn it is.Ĭonsider there might be some time lag when presenting live. Make it clear when you are giving time for everyone to speak by calling on them.Monitor the chat periodically and give people time to use it.Set ground rules at the start of a class and stick to them! Ask participants to raise their hand or use the chat function rather than going straight to a microphone if they wish to speak.Ensure documents are accessible for all participants.Explain to students how you want them to work with, and/or access these resources.Explain what the resources will be used for. Clearly inform students on what online resources you will be using.Ensure that everyone can participateĮveryone you teach should feel able to contribute, regardless of the teaching method being used. With the shift to Connected Learning and greater online interaction at UCL this year, it is important that we prepare students for systems, platforms and approaches they can expect in their studies.

In contrast, the back feet are only moderately webbed and mainly used for grooming the fur. The end of each front foot is equipped with a broad expanse of webbing, forming a highly effective paddle when the animal swims and dives. Interestingly, the platypus relies almost exclusively on its front limbs to propel itself through the water. The fur is dark brown above (apart from a small light-colored spot just in front of each eye) while the chest and belly are silvery cream, sometimes marked with a tawny or reddish streak running along the animal's midline. The animal's color pattern ensures that the platypus blends in with its watery environment when viewed from either above or below. The platypus has a flattened, streamlined head and body, well suited to its aquatic lifestyle. The taxonomy of this species is Ornithorynchus anatinus (Shaw, 1799), New Holland (Sydney), New South Wales, Australia. Based on genetic evidence, it is believed that the platypus and echidna lines have been evolving separately since the late Cretaceous or early Tertiary periods, 63–78 mya. The nearest living relatives are the echidnas (family Tachyglossidae). At least one type of ancient platypus is also known to have lived in the Patagonian region of South America some 61–63 million years ago (mya), when South America was still physically joined to Australia as part of the giant southern supercontinent, Gondwana. Several extinct ornithorhynchid species have been described, mainly from fossils found in Australia. No subspecies or races are known to occur. The family Ornithorhynchidae includes just one modern species, the duck-billed platypus. While LogMeIn Hamachi is a decent VPN solution, you can get a superior VPN for less money. Hamachi, however, doesn’t manage a bank of servers and cannot be used on sites that employ geoblocks. This tool lets you assign specific individuals or employees access to participate in multi-contributor podcasts, secured conference calls, and multiplayer games. Networks are created by users sharing their system space so that other users can connect to the network. LogMeIn by Hamachi is an excellent option for gamers and business persons who wish to connect with peers on a localized network. I decided to test it out to see what its performance would be like and if it was easy to set up. It is a self-hosted service that works by creating a VPN tunnel that allows you and your team to connect to your home or business network. LogMeIn Hamachi isn’t your typical VPN solution.
However, one has to go even further back than Edinburgh 1910 to find the original inspiration for this. This was by far the largest of all the 2010 conferences at over 4,500 people from almost 200 nations, with Christianity Today dubbing it the ‘The Most Diverse Gathering Ever.’ Technically, it was not a stand-alone conference, being the third Lausanne Congress. They are representative of where Christian missions today sees itself, in thought and praxis: There were many more conferences than that in the centenary year, but these five in particular stand out: Tokyo 2010, Edinburgh 2010, Cape Town 2010, 2010Boston, and CLADE V. Mission in the Twenty-First Centuryįast-forward 100 years: what does mission look like in the twenty-first century? There were no less than five missionary conferences-one on each major continent-vying to be the successor to Edinburgh 1910. Its aftereffects are what gave it its vaunted nickname, not the conference itself. However, it spawned a Continuation Committee which led to the formation of the International Missionary Council, the World Council of Churches, and the Lausanne Movement. Ironically, it was not even very ecumenical: it lacked denominational diversity (it was mainly Protestant, with a sprinkling of Anglo-Catholics), it lacked enough women, it lacked ethnic diversity (it was mainly Western, and Anglo-American at that), and it lacked geographical diversity (it had no black Africans, only 17 Asians, and no Latin Americans whatsoever). What made this conference so important was demonstrated by its nickname: the birthplace of the modern ecumenical movement. The Edinburgh 1910 World Missionary Conference is the best-known missions conference in history. Maybe it’s because we eat a lot of food from our own gardens, but passengers like that, let alone the odd hair, just aren’t an issue. Now, party people, I’m here to tell you that food just doesn’t pop out of the ground in a pristine state. I threw out the whole bag … I was unable to drink tea for a week”. One of the China Green Tips reviewers on comments “I found a rather long, nasty, kinky hair … I was shocked. It’s delicate and much better than the other (far cheaper) green teas I’ve tried Salada Green Tea is particularly noxious. Unpleasant, indeed.įor what it’s worth, if you’ve tried & disliked other green teas, give Tazo China Green Tips a shot. The Tazo version includes Lemon Verbena, some mint, and other flavors that cranked the scent up to 11 and the taste far into my ptui range. I’d been adding lemon grass from our garden to the morning cuppa for a pleasant lemon scent. Left me with three cents on the card I’m not a regular customer, so it’s now in the pile of cards I use as measurement shims in the workshop. So I picked up three boxes of Tazo tea bags at the local Starbucks: more China Green Tips and some Green Tea with Lemon Grass (which doesn’t appear on their website). She was in the Starbucks Customer Service chain o’ command, anyway. It seems Starbucks either owns Tazo, both of ’em are controlled by the same outfit, or something like that. After convincing her that I wasn’t rabidly angry and that it really was one of their beetles, she dispatched fifteen bucks worth of Starbucks gift card. On the other paw, it’s hard to filter stuff like that out of the stream.įought my way through the Flash-saturated Tazo site, sent a note to the Customer Service folks, eventually had a pleasant phone chat. Not a big deal, as garden beetles are fairly inoffensive critters, but not something that should make its way into a bag of lah-dee-dah tea. It looked pretty much like the hull of a generic Asian Garden Beetle, although we haven’t seen anything quite like it in our gardens. This interesting additive appeared in one of my teaballs fortunately I was awake enough to notice it before it wound up in hot water. Teabags are a spendy way to buy tea, so I’ve been buying half a kilo at a shot from, storing it in glass jars, and teaspooning it into a tea ball infuser over the course of the next year. Green tea is supposed to be good for you and Tazo China Green Tips is supposed to be pretty good tasting, so I’ve been sipping a cuppa or two in the morning. Memo to self: affix a stable camera platform to the side of the house! Memo to Self 1 Comment The basics are out there if you rummage around for a while with the obvious keywords. I didn’t actually figure all this out from first principles, of course. Then it’s showtime! I’d upload it, but you don’t have a need to know for our backyard activiites. You can use mencoder: mencoder "mf://*.jpg" -mf fps=10 -o daily800.avi -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=msmpeg4v2:vbitrate=800 The file names coming out of your camera won’t work if they’re not exactly sequential, which is highly unlikely over the course of the year. The file specifier %04d must exactly match the filename sequence and a missing file will stop ffmpeg dead in its tracks. Make the movie: ffmpeg -r 3 -i %04d.jpg daily-3.mp4 #ANGRY IP SCANNER BLUE DOT MOVIE#You can smash them even further to get a teeny postage-stamp movie for your media player. Imagemagick‘s convert program then squishes them down: for f in *jpg do convert -verbose -resize 640x480 $f Smaller/$f done #ANGRY IP SCANNER BLUE DOT FULL#I used the camera’s full resolution, which is much too large for video, so I created Yet Another Subdirectory called Smaller to hold the reduced-size images. Digikam‘s batch file rename operation can sort out the files in ascending order of EXIF date and rename them into something a bit more uniform & boring like 0001.jpg, which is vital for ffmpeg. I’d uploaded the files whenever I used the camera for something else, so the actual file dates were fairly well scrambled and didn’t correspond to the EXIF data inside the image file. Zero: copy the files to a unique subdirectory to protect the originals!.The plan: use ffmpeg or maybe mencoder to convert the still images into a movie. That’s all well and good, but this is the movie age… DST/EST changeovers threw their usual monkey wrenches into the mix, not to mention my lack of attention to the camera’s internal clock settings, but I eventually got 321 pictures of the same scene at more or less the same time of day. Being that sort of bear, I took a picture of the back yard from our patio every day at 7 am wall-clock time. |
